De Volkskrant (Dutch newspaper) closed public access to the archive of the online art platform OOG. The archive represents close to 250 works of internationally renowned artists and has now moved to the collection of the Dutch Institute of Media Art (NIMK) where it can be accessed through the Internet.
OOG (2005-2009) was a unique and progressive visual commentary platform for the online edition of De Volkskrant a major Dutch daily national newspaper. During a period spanning more than four years, every week, OOG presented a different digital artist working in sound, image and interaction and asked them to respond to news and current affairs. Artists became ‘Visual Correspondents’ and explored their role creating an alternative insight into courant events whilst experimenting with the visual possibilities within an online news mass medium.
The OOG archive is an exceptional collection of works, representing a unique platform, which shows the development of cutting edge digital imaging and digital art as news commentary exploring the alternative position of the visual artist with the newspaper environment. At the same time it represents a historical timeline through visualised events.
